User rights of Customer on Payment

What are your rights when making payments in Europe?

  • Cross-border euro payments from euro area countries to other EU countries will cost the same as domestic payments in euro; December 15th international payments in euro from non-euro area countries - as much as domestic payments in national currency.
  • The fee for withdrawing cash from another ATM at another bank should be the same in your country and in another Member State.
  • Unauthorized payments (such as those made with a stolen credit card) may not result in a consumer's loss of more than EUR 50 (unless such payment is made by the consumer's own gross negligence). The user will not be liable for unauthorized payments made after the bank has been notified of the loss or theft of the card or for online payments if the payment service provider (bank) does not apply more secure authentication procedures.
  • If you use a direct debit service, that is, you have allowed the payee to initiate payments from your payment account periodically, you have the right to contest any incorrect payment within 8 weeks. Any incorrectly debited funds must be returned to you within 10 business days.
  • You have the right to know if and what commission is applied to your payments.
  • Once you pay with an EU-issued payment card, the merchant can no longer charge you for any additional charges.
